Department of Epidemiology Area of Concentration -- Clinical Trials

One of the major activities of the Center is the training of predoctoral and postdoctoral students.  The Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomed School of Public Health includes a Clinical Trials concentration with the aim of educating students in the design, conduct, and analysis of trials. Elements of the concentration include:

• Formal academic course work with a major methodologic component.

• Trainee rotations in clinical trials during which students receive "hands-on" experience.

• Independent methodologic research.

• Special courses and seminar series.

The Center has a training grant from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Applicants for traineeships must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and must have been accepted into a doctoral degree program in the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

National Eye Institute Pre and Post Doctoral Traineeships

The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health announces the availability of pre- and post-doctoral traineeships in clinical trials related to clinical trials methodology and vision research. These positions are supported by a training grant awarded by the National Eye Institute (EY 007127) and include full tuition and fees, trainee travel, and a stipend.

Trainees will pursue a course of studies leading to a PhD with dissertation research relevant to clinical trials methodology. In addition, post-doctoral trainees will pursue independent methodologic or vision related research in epidemiology and biostatistics under the tutelage of faculty associated with this training program.

Eligibility:
MD degree or equivalent for postdoctoral students.
Bachelors degree or equivalent with background in mathematics or biological
sciences for predoctoral students.
Successful application to the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Ophthalmologists or those interested in eye diseases given preference.

Trainees and other interested students are encouraged to undertake a research project in clinical trials for presentation at scientific meetings, such as those held by the Society for Clinical Trials.

  Seminars covering a wide variety of topics with speakers from the Biostatistics faculty and outside experts.

• Department of Epidemiology Seminar Series
  Twice weekly seminars in which guest speakers deal with epidemiological problems, and faculty and students present and discuss current research.

• Continuing Education Courses
  Offered by departments within the School of Medicine. Many highlight findings from clinical trials and their implementation in medical practice.

• Research in Progress
  Monthly meetings for students (and occasionally faculty) to talk about their "research in progress," to review progress, and to provide input.
